Shades of love on Gurudutt’s Canvas

Love is increasingly becoming risqué- taking in bollywood . But the same bollywood will always be obliged to the work of Vasanth Kumar Shivashankar Padukone popularly known as Guru Dutt. In remembrance of Guru Dutt, IAAN Express commemorates one of the most acknowledged work on celluloid -“Pyasa”.

“Pyasa” is the journey of a poet who is struggling to get recognition from the world. The world continuously declines Vijay which was played by Gurudutt himself with utmost conviction. He lived the tragedy relentlessly and absorbed the disgust. His pain convinces the audience. Unlikely, Vijay never broke into tears or blasted into anger during rejections. He accepts all thrust upon him. His eyes nethier got red nor got filled with salty water. He neither blamed destiny nor the world. His patience and persistence evokes the love which was inspirational but unrealizable. The character of Vijay is devoid of any kind of violence and gimmick. When pain became unsustainable all agonies imbibed into poetry. It was the same poetry which failed to reach to the acclaimers. Vijay gets an admirer as Gulab. Wahida Rehman impressively gets in the character of Gulab. This was a bold attempt to shatter the perceived image of a Heroine in that era. She played the role of a prostitute with dignity. At any stage no one can find the objectionable cheapness in her performance. She is immensely beautiful in the deglamorised role. As Vijay grew on the audience mind because of irrefutable pain Gulab settled in the heart of same with her unconditional love. Meena the lady love of Vijay played by Mala Sinha rejects him for being poor and unsuccessful. She regrets on her decision. The rich man to whom she gets married gives him all but not the love she wanted. Meena was an unsatisfactory and helpless, almost dejected by her husband. She cannot break the golden shackles neither she could be with his love. Relation and encounters between Meena and Vijay cannot be perceived as extra marital affair. The three central characters of “Pyasa” are derived from love. Three of them keeps urging for the love which is not in their destiny. They all choose harsh destiny.

Pyasa created in 1959 still makes sense in 2013. It is a painful story of unending suffering experienced by Gurudutt as Vijay. Gurudutt as a director holds large canvas in which he draws all shades of love in all the characters he emulated from imagination. Vijay is poor and struggling poet who is patiently endeavouring to get recognition for his work. He had a widowed mother played by Leela Mishra and two elder brothers played by Mehmood and Radheyshyam. Just in few scenes of beginning gurudutt gains immense sympathy for Vijay. Vijay who had left his house because of his misery avoids to get caught by his mother who was desperate to see her wandering son. She takes Vjiay home where he was barbarically taunted for being a poet and eventually kicked off from house after a diatribe by his elder brothers. He lefts home in despair and leaves her mother there. Again Gurudutt the director amazingly conveys the emotional suffocation of helpless relation between Vijay and his mother. From here onwards audience experiences a rare romance which overflows from bleeding heart of Vijay and Gulab. Waheeda Rehman as Gulab tries to get naughty and cosy with expressions while in effort of catching Vijay. In the role of a prostitute, young and attractive Wahida Rehman doesn’t shed her cloth neither reveals her body. Gurudutt captures the appeal from Gulabs expressions in close shots and body movements which cannot be called dance, but just strolling through the street. In the song “ Baat Kuch Aisi Hui” Wahida Rehman wrapped in plain Sari delivers an unforgettable performance which is still iconic in its own terms. Well, that was not enough to tremble all the cords of emotion. Gurudutt introduces Vijays love interest from college days, Mala Sinha in the role of Meena. Meena is married to a rich and shrewd man with gloomy anger on face Mr. Ghosh played by Rehman. Vijay, Meena and Mr. Ghosh meets at the alumni association of college, where Vijays anguish gets expressions of barbed wire taunt poetry by seeing her beloved married to Mr Ghosh. Mr. Ghosh smells the smoke of Vijays burning heart for Meena and decides to take on his wife’s ex-lover. He offers him job at his publishing house, Vijay unknown to the fact that Ghosh is husband to Meena accepts the offer with the hope that his poetic creation wil get inked some day. Gurudutt have a powerful imagination of creating impressionable scenes. In the party scene at the house of Mr. Ghosh where Vijay is made to do slavery not knowing that this is the house of his married beloved faces soft toned harsh insult shatters all the hearts sympathized with the protagonist. On the other hand Gulab, who was enthralled by the poetry of Vijay falls in love with him. She waits at the places where she can suppose off Vijay. The sudden transformation of her character from attractive and naughty into a wandering gloomy soul searching for Vijay was brilliantly personified. Gurudutt designs another encounter of Vijay and Gulab. Gulab who was searching for a customer was chased by policeman. During her chase she colloids and get embraced to Vijay. She pleads him to save her from being caught. On asked by policeman he acknowledges Gulab as his wife. As acknowledgement pours into the years of Gulab, she surrenders herself to Vijay completely. She gets devoted to Vijay with inadmissible love. Mighty hearted Vijay who imprisons all sobs all this long finally breaks into tears when he gets the news of his mother’s death. No loving son can survive the pain of mother’s death. Vijay fails to contest against this dejection from destiny and ends up at alchohol. Every time when Vijay’s heart bleed unexpressed hate and anger freezed into poetry for the world which continuously rejected him, this time it “Jinhe Naaz Hai Hind Par Wo Kaha Hain”. Gulab holds hand of lost Vijay and shares his grief, inspires the man she loves to live for poetry and her lady love Meena. Vijay being in an unfortunate accident while saving a beggars life, suffers mental injury and beggar dies but news of Vijay’s death spreads. Gurudutt, the Maestro of capturing emotions emulates how the two ladies who are in love with Vijay conceive the death news of him? Mr. Ghosh gets relentlessly emotionless when he reads out death news aloud deliberately from news paper for his wife who is carrying soft corner for Vijay. In another scene Gulab who is just about to apply sindoor gets news and shatters. She gets windowed even without getting married. Gulab decides to publish the poems of Vijay. She takes his poetry collection to the publishing house of Mr.Ghosh. Mr. Ghosh finally publishes poetry collection of Vijay which becomes an outrageous hit. The fact that the creator of gem of a collection is no more sympathises readers more and lures friends and elder brothers of Vijay. Vijay gets the deserved recognition after his death. Drama does not end here. More harsh reality of world unfolds on celluloids as climax starts building from Gurudutts understanding. Vijay appears from nowhere and witness the world recognizing and admiring his work. Since he is dead to people, he saw how people try to relate with him to get recognized. Stark realties of human made relations are painful and gets nastier yet loving as it is seen through the spectacles of Gurudutt.  Finally, when the world recognizes and hails him, he rejects it.He punishes the world by not availing the poet in him to the needy world. As the celluloid journey of Pyasa reaches destination Vijay gets the true love in Gulab. “Pyasa” is an unparallel work of Maestro who in real life also lived like Vijay.
Pyasa will loose its emotions in subtraction Sahir Ludhiyavis powerful and painful poetic lyrics. SD Burmans original tunes makes lyrics seep deep in heart. Intelligent use of spot lights at crucial stages adds divinity to the character of Vijay especially in the song "Tang Aa Chuke Hain Kashm-e-Kashe Zindagi Se" in the climax. Mohd. Rafi gets four songs and creates the melody in pain. "Sar Jo Tera Chakraye" is a funny song and perfectly enacted by Johny Walker was huge hit then and tremendously used from movies to commercials even now.  Hemant Kumars lends voice to "Jane Woh Kaise Log", a situational song in which Vijay realises that Meena is married to Mr. Ghosh. Legendary singer Geeta does playback for all the songs pictured on Wahida Rehman and Mala Sinha. Geeta Dutts magical voice relishes in "Jaane Kya Tune Kahi" and in the Duet song with Mohd Rafi in romantic song "Ham Aapki Aankhon Me". Pyasa is complete package which touches every emotion of love. It is a master piece by a maestro of expressing love on celluloid.  When love is expressed on screen with acceptable intimacy and sometime with limitless intimacy, it is necessary to remind that there was a filmmaker who found romance in hardships and tragedies of life. Gurudutts romance was infinite and incompetent. Gurudutts camera captured intimacy of emotions instead of physical intimacy. He conquered in trembling thought space and provoking emotions of positivity instead of titillating. His heroines were never just symbolic. His story narration is incomplete without woman in central position. His stories were not gender oriented. Each character has its own gravity. He used high quality literary work in songs and dialogues which was not less than collection gems. Gurudutt was a rare combination of film making attributes of high quality.                                                       If filmmaking is an art then Gurudutt will always be the most exquisite artist. His understanding and courage of sketching characters on celluloid was a metaphor in itself. Among all the emotions that he successfully stimulated in the heart of audience was romance. He was so natural with his approach that audience have rarely seen protagonist embracing beloved and yet he made felt what he wanted. “Pyasa” one of his most acclimatised creation got space in TIMES MAGAZINE in the list of all time romantic movies ever made. Pyasa is not just romantic story. It is about sustaining anguish of undeserved failure.

Who will decide moral values?

Freedom, Choice and Law of land

Rise in heinous crimes against women and recent public protest across the nation fired up debate to rethink over the freedom which we inherited.  Who will decide moral values? This is the question often being tossed nowadays by the librated thinkers of society. There can be no cause correct which justify crimes like Rape. Modern culture as seen in metro cities which reaches in its weird version to emerging towns is also making conservative class of society worried. As said by Rabindernath Tagore, We have borrowed the spectacles but lost the sight.

India is probably only democratic country in real sense where protestors are not dealt brutally on the name of mob controlling. Delhi gang rape which grabbed the attention of globe and followed by upheaval took off from protest by mass comprised of youth, forced the policy makers and administrators to articulate strict laws. Various committees are set up and are in progress of reconstruction of laws which should sleek in society and create safety for women and fear for criminal. This is intrigue to uncover the fact that economic development which we enjoyed after Liberalization has something to do with the sexual crimes. Liberalized economic policies not only imported investment but also got ultra modern culture for free. Things which we get for free often don’t have significant value but depending on users brain can be utilized. Western life style and culture which is continuously blamed by politicians and conservative society, has succeeded in touching the lives of all in one way or other. Women are deprived and victimized in India before liberalization despite of laws and regulations. Does those micro-minis attract rapist mind. Instead of checking the ingredients of culture curry why not look once at the ethical and moral part of day to day life.
Generation next which demands for free way culture is ideologically confronting with those who thinks that they have protected and preserved the moral values. If it is rightly so accepted, then why there is a huge disproportionate difference in male to female sex ration. Why there is rise in youth addiction? Why Vivekananda is an obsolete inspiration or an inspiration for a niche?  A woman which gets status of Goddess, to worship only is made to remain confined. Sometimes walls made of bricks and sometimes made of societal values. Much talked economic poverty should take metal poverty in the ambit. Gennext boys and girls who are brought up in free culture have developed the characteristic of not accepting “no”. This is the population which loves instant comments and likes, prefers instant food and instant formulas of success. Tolerance and persistence cannot be attributed to the urban youth largely dependent 3G speed. Conservative minds that are rigid on their principles are slow and steady, and are far behind as compared modern youth. Just take the example of Khap panchayats not considering their political power they do influence society of their remit. Khap panchayts have some sort public acceptance. Irrespective to their modus operandi their declarations are generally accepted by the masses they govern. That is why those voice are less and feeble which are against such legally unrecognized governing bodies. In modern society choice may have a limitless perspective but in small town, choice is as limited as having favorite street food once a week with family or friends. Popular actress can say that what if they walk naked on road, this is their choice. This choice is derived and shielded by right. Choice cannot be accounted on grounds morality, or can be. Do laws of land make people ethical and moral? Actually, laws are made to create fear. However, fear can control less empowered and very general, The common man. The middleclass of society have to bear the pressure of conserving, protecting and abiding the laws made by Government or that of Khaps. Word freedom is the most confusing word contextually. The real freedom is enjoyed by super rich and powerful class and the super poor class of society. There is one more poor class of society which is now categorized as neo-middle class. From where these terminologies come? This is the resultant intervention of laws and law maker in social life of common man. Why debates concerned with law and order are highly inclusive. Few educated people make rules and regulation for specific crimes and for generalized population.
The congruent point in celebrated freedom and restricted choices under the remit of Law of Land need to be redefined with utmost simplicity. Words acknowledged by the men in khaki with stick in hand can create fear momentary but cannot make people abide. Choices are infinite. Choice can be anything. Who will delimit the choices? Law of land should not define the behavioral conduct. Culture is unanimity of difference in choice. In democratic society like India, voices must be raised, heard and addressed.  Issues must be debated, devoid of diatribe features. If micro mini or anything which uncovers body instead of covering can be a choice then choices are open for those also who objectify women in item numbers and erotic advertisement. As used by sensor authorities the phrase “good taste” is a very vague and delicate term, and can be easily victimized by highly commercialized creativity.  Consequently, you have songs in which heroine says “I am the Tandoori Chiken meant to be consumed with Alcohol”. Don’t forget those ads in which girls go crazy after a boy by smelling a perfume he used on himself. Amazingly, all these are of good taste and that’s why these are broadcasted. This is also a matter of choice for the audience. But do they have any choice if they continuously bombarded with the same erotic audio visual? Do people of India have a choice to understand freedom with rights and duties of a citizen in context of the Law of Land?

Rahul, Rajnath and Rajneeti

Unchallenged selection of leaders to lead parties who leads world’s largest democracy

This is the irony of Indian polity that politician who are sung as future leaders are selected unopposed from their respective party. One can say that political dynasty is still governed by the principal of passing on the throne, to the son king own. It is the season of turmoil and reshuffles in political leadership. Till now only twice the very reserved post of vice president is utilized in congress. Rahul Gandhi is third to sworn in as vice president of grand old congress. Party with difference BJP has been trying best to plaster up the cracks resulted because of ego clashes. Nitin Gadkari for whom BJP almost changed the party constitution replaced by the aggressive RSS man and former party president Rajnath Singh. In south DMK president MK Karunanidhi wants his younger son MK Stalin to take over leadership.  In Shiv Sena udhhav Thakre is now officially at helm of party. In Samajwadi Party Akhilesh Yadav is same as Rahul Gandhi for congress. There is no replacement or even stand by for Mayawati in BSP. At center it will be a fight of emotional Rahul VS hardliner Rajnath Singh.
Rahul who have been keeping mum after the failure in UP assembly elections delivered an emotional speech at Congress Chintan Shivar held in Jaipur. Rahul’s every single word was enriched with clamors from supporters. Rahul officially rewarded with more powers and so called responsibility, which he is enjoying since his arrival on political ground. Congress prince is being continuously alleged sarcastically by the rivals as where he stepped in for Congress, Congress loosed the ground devastatingly. Even the facts doest discourage voices which are against Rahul. Rahul Gandhi failed where ever he tried with full force, be it assembly elections of UP or Bihar. Despite of ups and downs congress and mother Sonia Gandhi is solidly standing with the new Vice President of Congress. Rahulji, as acknowledged by Congress president Sonia Gandhi holds a much more powerful stature then any of the post can empower. He is also given the responsibility to lead party in general election. Zeroing process on leadership issue for congress is much easier as it seems from outside. Rahul is future of congress with inevitable need and absolute compulsion. Congress voters will not imagine congress without a Gandhi member at the helm of national affairs. Rahul gave special mention to what her mother said to him. He said in his speech which was broadcasted live on all channels, that her mother came to him and told him that power comes with venom and mother cried. Rahuls narration made the congressmen teary. Rahul cried, Mother Sonia cried, senior leaders cried and the fresher’s cried. He emphasized that grassroots level worker must be respected and his problems should be heard and addressed. He advocated for changing the system which the whole nation wants, but why congress is preserving the issue for 2014. If that will is so genuine congress can began over hauling of government machinery in 2013. Rahul is immune to critical questions. He opted to stay quite on Anna agitation, Inflation, FDI, Cash Subsidy and on many scandals which happened in past few years. He didn’t spoke anything even on Delhi Gang Rape. Is he not moved when the UPA-2 was shaken up by the youth at Rajpath and India Gate. Social networking world goes on to comment that Rahul is perfect substitute to Manmohan Singh, who also prefers to stay quite. On the very first day of office at Akbar Road when mercury registered 5 c senior leaders wrapped in shawls stood up in queue to put garlands on the shoulders of new vice president as assuming to him PM returning from a foreign tour. Rahul ji was in cotton kurta and in regular jeans with sports shoes, as there is enough warmth of enthusiasm in his blood to pump zest in Grand old party of nation.
Rajnath Singh is senior and respected leader of Bhartiya Janta Party. After a high voltage drama Rajnath Singh replaced Nitin Gadkari as party president. Nitin Gadkari who was alleged with charges of corruption in various cases is facing tremendous oppose not only from rivals but within the party. Top brass of BJP like L.K Advani, former Finance minister Yashwant Sinha, Ramjeth Malani never preferred RSS supported Nitin Gadkari as president for second term. Even the Hindutva poster boy and touted as BJPs popular option for PM candidate Narender Modi were in the league of oppose. On the other hand Narender Modi who got thumping majority to complete hat-rick in Gujarat is not accepted as candidate for PM by few senior leaders. BJP is rightly said as party with a difference. Just before the day when Rajnath Singh got second time lucky to lead BJP a tussle was going on between RSS and BJP over the second term for Nitin Gadkari. BJP’s senior most leader L K Advani was not in support of existing party president and RSS was not in mood think of non hindutva face. BJP was lacking leaders in the process. Just before the last day of filing nomination Yashwant Sinha asked for nomination papers to register clear oppose and indirect challenge for Nintin Gadkari. Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitly with soft image were not acceptable to RSS. Rajnath Singh being a pro-hindutva leader was an obvious choice. With heavy heart Nitin Gadkari have to make way out or himself and in for Rajnath Singh. Unlike Rahul Gandhi, experienced and aggressive Rajnath Singh declared his intention in the sworn in speech. He strongly condemned Home Ministers statement Saffron Terrorism. He announced for nationwide protest against government in leadership of Shushma Swaraj. Devoid of masses protest was not that big as people have seen in recent past. It was actually the announcement of arrival of hardliner Rajnath Singh.
This is interesting in political parties leaders are chosen unopposed. In the largest democracy of World there is no open method for selection of leaders at the helm within the party. It is general applicability that there is dearth of leaders who rise for grass root level. Leaders in super secured zone who travel in bullet proof Vehicles can be leader of masses. Media convener or popularly known as spokes person does the all talking. Leaders who are projected as mass leaders during election seasons hardly have seen taking head on questions. No one remembers when Rahul have given popular speech in anywhere not even in Loksabha. The famous Kalawati speech of Rahul during nuclear deal did have some impressions in media and in public. Even that speech was full of emotions. Rajnath Singh who does carry aggressive image has yet to rise above acclaimed hindutva trademark.
